New & Exciting News:  Thursday morning coffee hour gave birth to the Dexter Free Library “Caring Crafters”.  Through a shared love of crochet and knitting the group created a dozen small afghans that were donated to CareNet in Watertown, NY for distribution to new parents for their babies.   In addition to this project over 50 dishcloths and potholders were made and donated to the Dexter-Brownville Methodist Church Food Pantry for participants.

We sent over 1200 Christmas/Holiday cards to NCLS for distribution to area residents of Nursing and Retirement homes at Christmas time.

Programs:  We offered a total of 98 programs throughout the year for adults, children, and teens.  These programs included Coffee, Community & Conversation (coffee hour), Teen Nights, Open Mic Nights, Children’s Pre-School Story Time, LEGO club and summer reading programs.   1401 people participated in out programs.

We introduced programming for homeschoolers on two Wednesday mornings each month.  These were LEGO Brainiacs and Art Adventures.

Circulation:  Here’s a look at what our patrons borrowed in 2017.    1,650 adult fiction books, 235 adult non-fiction books, 1,117 children’s fiction books, 260 children’s non-fiction books, and 476 DVDs were borrowed.   Our patrons additionally borrowed 648 eBooks.

If patrons had to purchase all of the items that were loaned this year the cost would have been in the thousands of dollars.   The average cost per book is approximately $20 – 25.

Our library loaned 774 items to other libraries and our patrons borrowed 647 items from other NCLS libraries.

1596 new items were added to our collection at a cost of $8,201.

Our website was visited 10,392 times.   Our public WIFI was accessed 2,188 times and our public computers were utilized 661 times.

Operating Costs:   Our total operating cost for the year was $63,009.   This included some unusual costs.   In October our furnace (of 18 Years) became the victim of basement flooding.   The library basement had not had previous flooding issues.   We were able to get a new furnace installed by Aire Serv.   We also had a sump hole dug by Moulton Brothers Construction and obtained a sump pump as well.     Wood that had been used as a retaining wall in the basement was removed due to water damage.    Action on the retaining wall was deferred until 2018.

ANNUAL FALL FUNDRAISING:   We held two fall fundraising events.   With our fall book sale and a paint night we raised just over $800 for the library.
